Notes/コメント:
Karate Do Kazumi Dojo is headed by one of my favorite Kyokushin Karate fighters, Hajime Kazumi. Kazumi was a 5 time All Japan Champion and came in 2nd in both the 6th and 7th IKO-1 World Tournaments. During his fighting career, he never finished outside of the top two spots. He focused on developing his low kicks and became one of the hardest and most successful low kickers in Karate history. I have tried to model my own leg kicks after Kazumi’s and like to think they work on my opponents. Kazumi resigned from the IKO-1 in the early 2000’s and started his own style where he focuses on kata and incorporates elements of Tai Chi.
I went to visit the Kazumi Dojo on my second to last day in Japan last year while I was coming back from Kamakura. I just wanted to take a picture of the outside and then post it on Instagram. When I arrived, an elementary school aged student parked his bike on the sidewalk and went upstairs. A few minutes later, Kazumi Shihan came down and told the student to fix his bike, because it was in the middle of the sidewalk. As they were heading back to the dojo, I stopped him and said that I was a big fan. He asked how long I had been training and invited me up to dojo. I spoke with Kazumi Shihan for a couple more minutes and then asked for a picture. As there was no one else around, we took a selfie in front of the kamidana. This was truly a unexpected opportunity and a total dream come true. It’s not often that you get to meet one of your favorite fighters and tell him how much you have modeled your Karate after his.
His dojo is about a 10 minute bus ride from JR Kawasaki Station.
The International Karate Kempo Organization Rakan Juku Honbu Dojo is a one minute walk away from Hanshin Nishinomiya Station in Nishinomiya-shi, Japan. Rakan Juku is a full contact Karate dojo that offers Kyokushin-style Knockdown Karate, Glove Karate, and Kickboxing classes to adults and children.
Although the style is called Rakan Juku, a Japanese pronunciation of the Buddhist term Luo Han or Arhat, and has Kempo in its organization’s name, I don’t believe it has any connection to Okinawan or Chinese Martial Arts.
Pro-Karatedo Federation New Japan Kickboxing Federation Rishinjuku Gym in Hirakata-shi, Osaka. This dojo focuses on K-1 style Kickboxing and some Knockdown Karate. It is located just across the street from Gotenyama Station on the Keihan Line. It is about a 12 minute walk from Kansai Gaidai’s Gotenyama Campus and a 20 minute walk from the Nakamiya Campus, where I studied abroad for 6 months in 2013.
They also organized the Tatsujin Pro-Karatedo event which I attended in September of 2015 while living in Japan. It was basically a bare knuckle kickboxing/MMA event and it certainly had some characters fighting.

A K-1 style Kickboxing and Muay Thai gym near Kansai Gaidai University’s Nakamiya Campus in Hirakata City, Osaka. This is an offshoot of the bare knuckle Karate style of Rishinjuku. The gym was not there when I was a student at Kansai Gaidai in 2013 ( I think it was a real estate agent or bank at that time), but I probably would’ve checked it out if it was.
Founded in 1952 by a top student of Chojun Miyagi, Meitoku Yagi, the dojo is located in the historic Kume district of Naha. The dojo is now run by Meitoku’s second son, Meitetsu Yagi. Although they are a traditional Okinawan Karate dojo, some of the younger dojo members now compete in Kyokushin style knockdown karate tournaments. This is one of the actors from the movie ” Kuro Obi”, Akihito Yagi’s family dojo.
