The International Karate Kempo Organization Rakan Juku Honbu Dojo is a one minute walk away from Hanshin Nishinomiya Station in Nishinomiya-shi, Japan. Rakan Juku is a full contact Karate dojo that offers Kyokushin-style Knockdown Karate, Glove Karate, and Kickboxing classes to adults and children.

Although the style is called Rakan Juku, a Japanese pronunciation of the Buddhist term Luo Han or Arhat, and has Kempo in its organization’s name, I don’t believe it has any connection to Okinawan or Chinese Martial Arts.

Pro-Karatedo Federation New Japan Kickboxing Federation Rishinjuku Gym in Hirakata-shi, Osaka. This dojo focuses on K-1 style Kickboxing and some Knockdown Karate. It is located just across the street from Gotenyama Station on the Keihan Line. It is about a 12 minute walk from Kansai Gaidai’s Gotenyama Campus and a 20 minute walk from the Nakamiya Campus, where I studied abroad for 6 months in 2013.

They also organized the Tatsujin Pro-Karatedo event which I attended in September of 2015 while living in Japan. It was basically a bare knuckle kickboxing/MMA event and it certainly had some characters fighting.

A K-1 style Kickboxing and Muay Thai gym near Kansai Gaidai University’s Nakamiya Campus in Hirakata City, Osaka. This is an offshoot of the bare knuckle Karate style of Rishinjuku. The gym was not there when I was a student at Kansai Gaidai in 2013 ( I think it was a real estate agent or bank at that time), but I probably would’ve checked it out if it was.

The Butokuden and Kyoto City Budo Center are on the grounds of the Heian Jingu Shrine complex in Kyoto. Completed in 1899, the Butokuden is the oldest martial arts center existing in Japan today. Built as a demonstration venue for the Dai-Nippon Butokukai, a government sponsored martial arts association that played a part in the militarization of Japan leading up to World War II. The grounds also held a school for training professional martial arts instructors, the Budo Senmon Gakko (see last picture for memorial).

Today, the Butokuden is part of the Kyoto City Martial Arts Center and a modern building for training was built next to the Butokuden in the 80s. The Martial Arts Center offers classes in Aikido, Judo, Kyudo, Kendo,Bujutsu Taikiken, Naginata, Sumo. Kendo and other weapons arts are still practiced in the old Butokuden building and the famous Kyoto Enbu Taikai takes place in the old building each year.

I first visited the Butokuden after learning about it as an exchange student in 2013, made several trips to it when I was working in Japan in 2015, and took my senpai from my Karate dojo in New York there when we were in Japan in 2019.

平安神宮敷地内京都市立武道センターと武徳殿は日本で一番古く既存の武道館です。武徳殿は大日本武徳会の元本部道場です。戦争の時まで校内で武道専門学校でした。現在、武徳殿のとなりに京都市立武道センターです。武徳殿のビルは古いけど、内で剣道となぎなた稽古をやってます。武道センターで合気道や柔道や武術太気拳をやってます。弓道場と相撲土俵もあります。

Tenshi Dojo is an independent full contact karate style that teaches adults and children.

In late March 2015, I attended a martial arts seminar taught by Dr. F ( Futaesaku Takuya), a Karate practitioner and Sports Science doctor. It was held in Toyonaka’s Municipal Budokan and the first two hours were lessons in technique and body mechanics, while the last hour or so was for sparring. Former UFC fighter, Kunimoto Kiichi, was a special instructor. I was one of three non-Japanese attendees and the only one that spoke decent enough Japanese to translate the lessons to the others. There were people from many different styles of full contact karate, some kickboxers, and some MMA guys. It was a very cool afternoon. The Takenaka family who run the Tenshi Dojo were the sponsors of the event and I got know Takenaka Sensei and his children fairly well that day.

２００１年創建して、大阪豊中市で空手道天志道場はフルコンタクト空手道場です。２０１５年３月の末にDR.Fの格闘技祭で竹中師範と竹中家に会いました。祭りの後に、Dr.F先生と竹中家と元UFCファイター国本起一選手と一緒にインドカーレを食べに行きました。

Byakuren is another style of full contact karate with roots in Shorinji Kenpo. They regularly host their own regional and national tournaments and their fighters compete in larger inter-organizational tournaments in Japan.

Fun fact: The organization also runs the Lotus Club martial arts supply store on the ground floor. There’s not much to look at in the store itself, but they supply a lot of the independent dojo and smaller full contact Karate organizations in Japan with mats and kicking shields.

白蓮会館は少林寺拳法に根差しているフルコンタクト空手です。国内で自分と他の空手連盟に合わせて大会を仕切りってます。海外でWKOって言う空手連盟で大会に出てます。

総本部の一階でLOTUS CLUBって言う空手道具屋があります。空手道着や色んな空手防具を買えます。

Notes/コメント：Karate Do Takao Dojo in Kadoma, Osaka. Takao Shihan was a former branch chief for Eastern Osaka in the IKO-1 and then broke away to form his own organization. When I arrived in Japan to study at Kansai Gaidai in January 2013, he was either in the process of resigning or had just resigned from the IKO. I remember there being some awkwardness (aside from my poor Japanese skills) when I signed up at a sub-branch dojo in Hirakata-shi, as my letter of introduction was from my Shihan in New York who is a very high ranking official in the IKO. This picture is from 2013 and I am sure the sign has changed to reflect the new organization since then.

大阪府門真市で空手道高尾道場の本部道場です。高尾師範は元極真会館大阪東支部長ですけど、２０１３年国際空手道連盟極真会館を退館。その後、道場は『空手道高尾道場』になりました。２０１３年関西外国語大学で留学しながら枚方道場で稽古をやりました。高尾師範は退館したばっかりので、入会した時はちょっとばつが悪かったけど、問題がなかったです。上の写真は退館前のサインです。

Notes/コメント：Founded by Naohiro Takahashi a Full Contact Karate and Kickboxing competitor with a history of wins in the Kyokushin and Full Contact Karate circuit. The dojo is located in the Hama Koshien neighborhood of Nishinomiya City, Hyogo. It’s about a 20 minute walk from Hanshin Koshien station and I lived about a 15 minute walk away from this dojo in 2015.

The head instructor, Takahashi, fought in a bare-knuckle kickboxing fight that I went to in the Fall of 2015.

元フルコンタクト空手とキックボクシング選手高橋直弘を創建して、日本実践空手道髙橋道場は西宮市浜甲子園での空手とキックボクシングジムです。阪神甲子園駅より徒歩１８分です。

大阪城の敷地内弓道場はJR大阪城公園駅の近いです。教室は初級コースと中級コースを教えてます。毎日オーペンレーンジの３部があります。
